Foodie Updates

All kinds of food related posts, just because I am so overwhelmed by gluttony. There will be recipes, tips, histories, science, random musings, photos, ideas, reposts, other people's food blogs.....as long as it has something to do with food. It would make it's way here. Feel free to comment and ask me anything food related. This would be material for future posts. =]

Posts I Like

This is a really late post. I’ve made this a few good months back but never got around to posting this. Featuring, Nanaimo bars!!!

Oh, don’t they look lush?

I came to know about Nanaimo bars while reading Edd Kimber’s blog. (Yep, that guy who won Great British Bakeoff Series 1.) He seems to like these Nanaimo bars or inspired ice cream or something like that, which makes me kind of wonder how it tastes like. It took me ages to finally get around to making these and these are awesome. So very rich, but awesome. Plus there’s no need to bake them at all. (Wooo-hooo!) Another plus for anyone without oven but still wants to impress people. Also, it’s so rich, you don’t need to make too much. You can feel the need to go to the gym after a few slices. Now that, is how comforting it is. *hurhur*

I can’t remember which recipe I used, it should be this one as recommended by the city of Nanaimo. I probably used this as this seems like the real deal which has won awards and I’ve bookmarked it. : http://www.nanaimo.ca/EN/main/visitors/NanaimoBars.html

This confection is well famous in Canada and is named after a habour city. It does seem like people to go there just for Nanaimo bars. There is even a Nanaimo bar trail. I am not sure if my heart, arteries, liver and gallbladder can take the stress from eating so much Nanaimo bars. If you look close enough, you notice there is a cafe with cushioned stools in the shape and design of Nanaimo Bars. How cool is that?! We don’t even have millionaire shortbread seats in the UK, or nonya kueh seats in Singapore.

There are some weird variations of Nanaimo Bars as well…. I’ve seen some peppermint versions, strawberry versions, peanut butter versions.. probably sounds like a good idea for some. Apparently someone actually think it was a “good idea” deep-frying them too. *feels a heart attack coming* I’m beginning to wonder if fried mars bars came first or fried Nanaimo Bars came first…

Anyway, if you want a more British version of the recipe, you could always refer to Edd Kimber’s recipe:  http://theboywhobakes.co.uk/2010/09/nanaimo-bars/
